Frequently Asked Questions

Top Ten Questions To Ask Your Pond Installer

Steer clear of an installer without the depth to handle at least these questions:

1.  How much experience do they have?

2.  Are they a certified contractor?

3.  Do they have their own pond?

4.  Business references.

5.  Can I view your display ponds?

These top 5 suggestions should answer the main concerns.

The following 5 points will give “you,” the consumer, an idea of what more to ask for.

6.  Do you offer seasonal maintenance...and what does it include?

7.  Where can I purchase supplies? (Fish food, bacteria, fertilizer tabs, etc)

8.  Does your company participate in any annual pond tour?

9.  Does your company offer continuing educational newsletters?

10.  What is the main focus of their business? (Landscaping, lawn care, etc)

If your contractor can meet these top 10 criteria, you are in for a great pond experience.  There are many Pond Installers out there, some are good, some are just doing it as a side line.

Q: How are pond dimensions measured?

bullet

A: There are two ways to measure pond dimensions; Perimeter & Water Surface

Perimeter is the traditional way of measuring the size of a pond. What this means is a pond 6' x 8' x 1.5' = Six feet wide by Eight feet long by One and a half feet deep. The Reason for going over this is most builders and suppliers measure the pond based on these figures. Where you begin digging on one side is Six feet from where you dig down on the other side. Where the confusion is, sometimes, is that where we dig down on a side is supported by Boulders of differing sizes. So you can have a 6' x 8' pond with rock around the rim holding the liner down and the water actually comes to 6" to 1' in from the border. See diagram below.

Water surface
would be in the range of 5' to 7' on the above example on a perimeter of 6' x 8'.
We have had a few customers recently question the Water Surface Area and that is what I'm attempting to clear up. If you want a pond with the water surface area of 6' x 8' the actual pond size will be larger and that equates to more costs. When if you are comparing our price with another builder or just for your knowledge, be certain on what you are getting. Compare apples to apples. Again our goal is to be clear before we start digging.

Q: What is the installation time?

A: Most 11' x 16' ponds can be completed in two work days. However, prior visits are made to discuss the design and placement of your pond. Every waterscape is unique in that we create a pond that meets your specific needs. Our creative team will guide you through the experience while taking all aspects of your yard into account. The completed pond will not only look natural in its setting, but will be ecologically balanced to take care of itself.

Q: What preparation is required?

A: Two things may be needed to prepare for the pond installation. We will need a separate electrical 110V GFCI (
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected circuit within 10 feet of the pond location. If you would like a separate water fill line we can install it. Both need to be within 10 feet of the pond. In most cases, we have an electrician install the power and we will install the water line.

Q: What about mosquitoes?

A: Mosquitoes flourish in stagnant water. Our ponds have moving water 24-7, so there is little chance of mosquitoes establishing themselves in this environment.

bullet

Q: What does it cost to run a pond?

A: An 11' x 16' pond will run about $25.00 monthly in electricity. The submersible pumps that we use are only drawing a maximum of 2.6 amps, using 286 watts.

Q: Are Fish necessary in my pond?

A: Fish are an important part of the eco-system, as well a source of pleasure. Fish are perfect. They bring great pleasure and there is little maintenance. You can choose to feed your new pets or not. The pond will provide the fish with the food they need. However, if you choose to feed your fish, you will find them very friendly and entertaining.

You can even train your fish to eat out of your hand or come to you by command.

When you go on vacation, the fish can take care of themselves. Koi fish can be bought for as little as $3.95 or a list of Koi Farms can be provided.

Q: Do I need plants?

A: Plants are another important part of the eco-system. Plants & algae compete for the nutrients in water. If you do not have plants, you will have algae.

There are many plants available for water gardens, from marginal to lilies. The plants all perform a function while beautifying your pond. Lilies should cover 60% of the pond surface area. Due to the shallow nature of the pond, lilies will keep the water cool in the summer and keep algae away. Lilies also come in two varieties, day and night blooming. Both kinds are wonderful to have in a pond.

Q: Why is a liner used instead of cement?

A: We use a liner because they do not leak. We live in an area where there are two realities. We have expansive soil and earthquakes. Cement ponds fail at some point. Our liner is a 45 mil EPDM, which is fish safe and has a life expectancy of 40 years. Firestone guarantees these liners for 20 years.

Q: Does the pond need a filter system?

A: Two different types of filters are used with our ponds.

The first one is a mechanical filter which is like a pool skimmer. This has a net bag that traps any debris that is blown onto the surface of the pond. This filter has the option of an automatic water fill. It also has an overflow connection. This filter also filters smaller particles and protects your pump, while keeping it clear, by means of a single media filter pad.

The second is a biological filter which is placed under the waterfall. This filter is completely hidden from view. This biological filter contains three more filtration pads, as well as 60 lb. of lava rock. This filter function is to convert toxic compounds produced from the fish into nitrates. These nitrates are utilized by the aquatic plants in your pond.

Both filters are necessary in maintaining the health and the cleanliness of your pond.

Rocks and gravel covering the bottom protects your liner from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, thereby extending it's life.
